How The Movies Began
A Live, Interactive, BIG SCREEN presentation. A journey from cave paintings to the future of digital technology, including the invention of Cinema. Answer the question, "Who invented the Movies?"
Part 1
Students will enter into the lobby where they are introduced to the timeline exhibit beginning with the earliest known cave paintings from France to the camera obscura.
Next will be the "Persistence of Vision" exhibit including Zoetrope, Mutoscopes, etc., with Muybridge's Zoopraxiscope to the Magic Lantern.
The Edison exhibit stands alone with a working Kinetoscope showing the original Edison films from the 1890's. The original Lumiere films follow with a recreation of the original Cinemagraphe showings of 1895.
Part 2
Next will be the 1900's with the development of the art form from around the world including Georges Melies, D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford (Canadian - the most powerful woman in early Hollywood), Charlie Chaplin & other early pioneers.
The 1920's bring sound, we encounter the Golden Age of Hollywood and the birth of the Studio System. There will be discussion of Canadians in movie history with a feature on Hamilton including theatre architecture with the single screen to megaplex evolution.
The 1950's bring the birth of the Drive-In culture and the introduction of Television. The development of colour cinematography & widescreen entertainment including changes in film formats.
The 1970's bring Home Video along with the death & rebirth of the Studios with the internet and their impact on the movies.
We end with the future - the death of 35mm & the birth of Digital Technology.
The exhibit will be mixture of hands-on & glass-cased artifacts with surrounding picture displays explaining the timeline.
All of part one is mandatory with part two broken down further into separate chapters for teachers to choose from.
The exhibit is followed by a 90 minute Big Screen Digital Media show with a live in-depth discussion of the timeline hosted by Dale Barker, Proprietor of THE MOVIE PALACE. The students will be tested with questions pertaining to the exhibit.
